Hurricane Simon moved parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast Sunday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds as its eye remained offshore near Jalisco and the Puerto Vallarta area. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents along the coast to stay indoors.
Reports differed on the storm’s intensity. PBS and Al Jazeera described Simon as a Category 4 hurricane, with Al Jazeera reporting winds of at least 240 kph (150 mph), while Deutsche Welle and the New York Post said it had weakened to Category 3; the Post cited maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. Authorities placed 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima under the highest cyclone alert and 93 others under high alert, Deutsche Welle reported.
Heavy rain raised concerns about mudslides in hilly and mountainous communities. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Simon was expected to move farther offshore Monday and turn back toward Mexico’s coast Wednesday, according to Deutsche Welle.
