Hōlei Sea Arch, a 90-foot lava-rock formation in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, the National Park Service said. The exact time of the collapse was not known; the arch was still standing on Sept. 23 and had disappeared by Sept. 27, according to the agency.
The formation, at the end of Chain of Craters Road on Hawaii island, was about 550 years old. The park service said the coastline around the arch had shown instability for years and had warned in 2021 that it would eventually fall. The arch is believed to have collapsed while the park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo, the BBC reported; the New York Times said a tropical storm was moving through the area. The Guardian reported rough storms had affected the region in recent weeks.
