Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg joined students demonstrating Tuesday outside Paul Eluard high school in Saint-Denis, a Paris suburb, as protests over conditions at education facilities were expected to continue nationwide.

Thunberg told AFP that young people were not included in discussions and that their future was being taken from them. Students have sought improvements including more teachers and better school buildings, Al Jazeera reported. Fox News reported that protesters in Saint-Denis also called for shorter school days. Lawyers in robes formed a human chain to protect students following allegations of police brutality, according to Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera said the protests began late last month, while Fox News said they began in September and reported French authorities had detained more than 6,800 people. The New York Times reported that President Emmanuel Macron had left his prime minister to address the nationwide protests publicly.
