Former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration’s investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar after federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., home on Oct. 12, calling the action an effort to target political opponents. Obama said on X that selective targeting based on political beliefs violates a basic democratic principle.

Reports said Homeland Security Investigations conducted the search as part of an immigration-fraud or citizenship investigation and took Omar’s cellphone and passport. Omar said the search was an attempt “to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” Tom Homan said investigators had a “strong case” but that evidence would determine the outcome. He also said Omar could be denaturalized and deported if she violated the law. Obama said the investigation should concern Americans.
