Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Tuesday appointed Fatima Zahra Mansouri as the country’s first female prime minister and asked her to form a new government.
Mansouri, 50, had been urban planning minister and mayor of Marrakesh before the appointment, according to the Associated Press. Her Authenticity and Modernity Party won the most seats in parliamentary elections announced four days earlier, AP reported. Deutsche Welle said the party took 97 of 395 seats, 31 more than its nearest competitor.
Mansouri is expected to seek a coalition with other political groups. Under Morocco’s constitution, the king appoints the prime minister from the party that wins the most parliamentary seats, Deutsche Welle reported.
