Ethiopian federal forces entered Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, after nearly two weeks of fighting, while an alliance of rebel groups including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front withdrew from the city, Al Jazeera reported. The report said fighting continued elsewhere in Tigray despite the advance.

Residents of Adigrat told the BBC that Eritrean soldiers had crossed into northern Ethiopia toward areas of clashes between national troops and regional forces. The BBC said both Ethiopia’s government and the TPLF accuse each other of violating the 2022 agreement that ended the earlier civil war. Ethiopia has also accused Eritrea of supporting the TPLF, an allegation Asmara has previously denied. Al Jazeera said the latest fighting has effectively ended the ceasefire, while the BBC reported that the unrest followed months of tension.
