Elon Musk has spent about $366 million on U.S. midterm-election efforts supporting Republicans, including $276 million since July, according to reports published Oct. 12. The spending makes Musk the largest known individual donor in this year’s races, the reports said.

Of the amount spent since July, $158 million went to a super PAC focused on Republican Senate candidates, according to The New York Times as cited by several outlets. Musk’s America PAC confirmed the totals to The Hill and the Times, Al Jazeera reported. A spokesperson told the Times the spending was intended to prevent Democrats from taking control of Congress. Reuters reported that Democrats’ prospects of retaking the House and Senate had improved.
