The Justice Department sent letters Tuesday demanding that California election officials review a list of potentially ineligible voters within 48 hours, threatening emergency legal action if they do not comply. Fox News reported that state officials were pushing back.

According to Fox News, Acting Deputy Attorney General R. Trent McCotter wrote to Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan, seeking steps aimed at preventing suspected noncitizens from voting in November's midterm elections. The department asked officials to separate ballots from people whose citizenship could not be verified and set a noon Eastern Oct. 15 deadline. The Hill reported that a voting-rights group said it would sue unless the department withdrew its demand that California authorities compare voter rolls with a USB drive supplied by the Trump administration.
