The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that inspectors found cyclospora at a Mexican farm linked to a lettuce outbreak that sickened nearly 13,000 people in the United States.
The agency found the parasite in a wastewater tank and in a drainage ditch used in lettuce cultivation. Officials said they had not determined how the lettuce became contaminated. The outbreak was linked to Taylor Farms, according to the New York Times.
The Times reported that the outbreak caused 570 hospitalizations and two deaths across 21 states over the summer. The Guardian said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had declared the outbreak over before the FDA announcement.
