Andy Burnham said at the Labour Party conference that he would change the state pension triple lock from 2030, with savings intended to help fund a national care service in England. Under the proposal, pensions would rise by inflation or 2.5% each year, but would no longer automatically track average earnings.
The BBC reported that Burnham also proposed greater public control of housing, water and energy services and raised possible electoral-system changes. Separately, the Daily Mail reported that he said Brexit had contributed to problems facing the country and that he would set out future options at a Brussels summit later this year. It said Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra called rejoining the EU “unrealistic.”
