María del Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old Madrid resident known as Maricarmen, is set to return to her home after the real estate firm offered to restore her previous rent following protests over her eviction last week, her lawyer said Tuesday.

Al Jazeera reported that the agreement would cap her monthly rent at about $570 for eight years, an amount equal to roughly 30 percent of her pension. It said an international investment fund had bought her building and raised her rent by more than 200 percent to about $1,880 a month. NPR reported that her case brought tens of thousands of people into the streets and prompted the Spanish government to present measures addressing housing.
