Pentagon Orders 30 Universities to Audit Foreign Ties to Avoid Funding Loss

The Pentagon has mandated that 30 American universities conduct audits of their financial and research connections to foreign entities to avoid losing federal research funding. The institutions are required to assess their foreign collaborations and identify any exposure to sensitive or export-controlled research. The universities affected include notable institutions such as Harvard University, New York University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The audits must be completed and findings reported to the War Department by August 31. The directive is part of a broader effort to mitigate risks associated with foreign exploitation of U.S. research and development. The audits specifically target foreign entities listed under Section 1286 of the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes institutions in China, Russia, and Iran. A report highlighted that Harvard University had significant research collaborations with Chinese institutions and received over $600 million from China, raising concerns about research security. Additionally, many U.S. universities have closed their Confucius Institutes due to funding concerns related to Beijing, reflecting ongoing scrutiny of foreign influence in American higher education.
