Texas Governor Reviews Airport Grants After DFW Airport Halts Islamic Foot-Washing Station Proposal

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Friday a review of state grants to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston following DFW's decision to discontinue plans for Islamic washing stations. Abbott stated that the review could lead to the revocation of grants and referred both airports to the U.S. Department of Transportation for investigation. He emphasized that government-owned airports should not favor one religion over others. DFW had been evaluating a proposal for ablution washing stations in Terminal D but decided against proceeding due to public interest and operational considerations. The project had been initially registered as privately funded with an estimated cost of $300,000, but DFW clarified that it would be funded by airport revenue, not taxpayer dollars. Abbott's office noted that George Bush Intercontinental Airport already has an ablution station and prayer room. He requested a review of religious facilities at both airports to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws.
