The World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. was vandalized, with bubbles filling a fountain and the phrase "Clean hands dirty $" written in red paint. This incident occurred shortly after President Donald Trump criticized damage to the nearby Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, referring to those responsible as "animals." Trump expressed his outrage on his Truth Social platform, stating that the vandalism is a significant insult to American heroes from World War II. The U.S. Park Police are investigating the incident, and the Interior Department has stated that they will find the individual responsible. The Friends of the National World War II Memorial, a nonprofit organization, condemned the act, emphasizing that national memorials should not be used for vandalism. The Veterans of Foreign Wars also denounced the vandalism as disrespectful to veterans and their families. The World War II Memorial is located just east of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Earlier this year, Trump had attributed damage to the Reflecting Pool to vandalism, but the Justice Department later dismissed a related case, citing a lack of evidence. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum noted that some vandalism acts were captured on video.
