Kentucky Teacher Arrested Under New Anti-Grooming Law

Kentucky's new anti-grooming law has led to its first arrest since taking effect on July 15. Sadie M. Flores, a 25-year-old teacher at Graves County Middle School, was arrested and charged with grooming a minor, a Class D felony. The Graves County Sheriff's Office reported that the allegation was made to the school district, which then informed law enforcement. Authorities conducted interviews and seized electronic records before arresting Flores. Laura Wills-Coppelman, founder of Institutional Complicity Kentucky, stated that the law allows for earlier intervention in potential abuse cases. She emphasized the importance of recognizing patterns of behavior that may indicate grooming, which can include excessive attention, secrecy, and isolation of a child. Wills-Coppelman noted that the law aims to create a point for authorities to investigate concerning conduct without criminalizing normal adult-child relationships. The legislation received unanimous support in the Kentucky legislature and was signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear on April 10. The superintendent of Graves County Schools, Matt Madding, confirmed that the district is cooperating with the investigation and takes allegations of misconduct seriously.
