Bernie Sanders Responds to Criticism Over Lack of Endorsement for Francesca Hong

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) addressed criticism from some left-wing individuals who blamed him for Francesca Hong's loss in Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary. Sanders stated that he does not have the resources to endorse every candidate favored by the Left, explaining, "We can’t endorse every single candidate." He praised Hong for her grassroots campaign despite her defeat to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley by approximately 3,000 votes. Following the election, some leftist commentators suggested that Sanders and other national leaders could have influenced the outcome had they endorsed Hong. Critics, including Nathan J. Robinson and Cenk Uygur, argued that Sanders' lack of involvement was detrimental to Hong's campaign. Sanders distanced himself from the organization Our Revolution, which criticized the broader left-wing movement after Hong's loss, stating he has not interacted with them for years. He highlighted his endorsements of other successful far-left candidates in recent primaries and noted that he feels positive about those outcomes. Hong's defeat has also been attributed to scrutiny over her past statements and positions during the campaign, which some believe distracted from key issues. Crowley will now compete against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the upcoming general election.
