Two contestants, Karisa Haverkamp and Jasleen Kaily, issued statements regarding their costumes. Haverkamp acknowledged that her outfit, which included a feathered headdress and a red hand painted on her cheek, caused offense to the Indigenous community. Kaily, who wore a fur ensemble, expressed that her intention was not to disrespect Indigenous culture.
Callingbull expressed her disappointment and emphasized that traditional or sacred items should not be used in such competitions. The Miss Universe Canada organization responded to the concerns, stating that they had received feedback about the costumes and would implement a comprehensive Costume Guide to prevent similar issues in the future. They acknowledged the need for education and understanding regarding cultural sensitivities. Borelli, the Miss Universe Canada director, invited Callingbull to serve as the official liaison for the costume competition moving forward.
