Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty on Friday in a federal criminal case where he is charged with stalking in connection with the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan in December 2024, according to a report by The New York Times. Mangione is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Manhattan for a pretrial conference with Judge Margaret Garnett.
In addition to the federal charges, Mangione faces murder charges in New York state court. If he pleads guilty in the federal case, his attorneys may argue that he cannot be prosecuted for murder in the state case due to New York's double jeopardy law.
Thompson, 50, was shot outside the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue while attending an investors' event for UnitedHealth Group. Jury selection for the state murder case is set to begin on September 8, while Mangione's federal trial is scheduled for January. In January, Judge Garnett dismissed two federal counts against Mangione, including one related to the murder of Thompson through the use of a firearm during alleged stalking. The remaining counts carry a possible maximum sentence of life in prison.
