The university explained that the cancellation was due to the event not meeting the required organizational standards for university-hosted events. Piker indicated that the cancellation was linked to his criticisms of Israel. He expressed disappointment that Democrats did not take a stronger stance against what he views as a violation of the First Amendment.
The decision to cancel the event has also drawn criticism from conservative groups. Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA stated that universities often cancel events due to administrative errors and called for free speech for all political viewpoints. Piker has been a controversial figure, known for his past statements, including comments regarding U.S. foreign policy and his defense of Hamas. He has been actively campaigning with socialist-aligned candidates in recent weeks.
