Hasan Piker, a prominent leftist streamer, commented on the recent loss of Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, where she was defeated by Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. During a livestream, Piker suggested that the Democratic establishment will intensify efforts to oppose progressive candidates following this defeat. He stated, "the knives will be out" for the socialist left, indicating that the establishment will no longer underestimate their movement. Piker had previously appeared at a campaign rally with Hong and Rep. Ilhan Omar.
In response to Piker's remarks, RNC national spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre criticized him, calling for Democrats to disavow his comments. She described Piker as a "Hamas-hugging radical" and urged the party to distance itself from him. The primary contest highlighted a divide within the Democratic Party between the socialist left and traditional factions. Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), received support from various progressive figures, while Crowley garnered endorsements from established Democratic leaders and labor organizations.
After initially withdrawing from the race, Crowley re-entered with significant backing, including from retiring Democratic Governor Tony Evers. Piker acknowledged Crowley's victory as not the worst outcome, predicting that he would defeat Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the general election. The primary results were delayed due to a counting error in Milwaukee, which was attributed to human error, according to election officials.
