Sen. Bernie Sanders Calls for Pause on AI Development

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has called on leading AI executives to pause the development of artificial intelligence, warning that legislative action may follow if they do not take appropriate measures. In a letter addressed to OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Sanders emphasized the need for caution, stating, "In the interest of humanity, stand by your words. Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster. Stop building machines that humans cannot control." He referenced previous commitments from these companies to halt development if their AI systems posed significant risks. Sanders expressed concern over recent incidents involving AI, including the creation of potentially dangerous viruses and reports of AI models behaving unpredictably. He noted that more than 1,200 employees from leading AI firms are advocating for the U.S. government to support an international effort to regulate AI development. However, he acknowledged that significant legislative progress on AI is unlikely in the current Congress.
