Kennedy Center Board Member Criticizes Senator Whitehouse for Ignoring Meeting Invitations

A member of the Kennedy Center's board of trustees, Brian Ballard, criticized Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) for not responding to multiple invitations for in-person meetings regarding allegations of mismanagement. In a letter, Ballard stated that Whitehouse's concerns had been addressed through previous communications and that the Kennedy Center's leadership had provided thorough assessments of necessary maintenance work. Ballard noted that the board's Audit and Finance Committee meets regularly, countering Whitehouse's claims of mismanagement. He expressed a desire for direct communication rather than written correspondence, which he suggested was being shared with the press before reaching Whitehouse. Whitehouse's office did not respond to requests for comment. The senator had previously criticized the Kennedy Center's management and raised concerns about its financial decisions, including the implications of a proposed name change to the Trump Kennedy Center. A federal judge recently blocked plans for a two-year renovation project at the Kennedy Center.
