In an interview with WISH-TV, she expressed a desire to refocus on basketball and ensure that the main focus remains on the sport. Cunningham stated, "I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’" She emphasized her intention to extend love while also being honest about protecting young girls in sports. In July, she reiterated her stance, saying she does not dislike anyone but believes in protecting the rights of biological women. The phrase "protecting women" has been associated with efforts to restrict transgender women from competing in female sports. Cunningham has faced backlash for her views, including being labeled 'MAGA Barbie' due to her social media interactions with prominent Republicans. She has rejected this nickname, stating it is based on assumptions rather than her actual political beliefs. Cunningham criticized the media for focusing on controversies instead of basketball, saying, "The WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball." Some members of the WNBA have publicly opposed her stance, with players like Stefanie Dolson and coach Cheryl Reeve wearing shirts advocating for transgender rights during games.
