U.S. Revokes Visa of Brazilian Ambassador Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The U.S. State Department has revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to the United States, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, due to escalating tensions between the two countries. A State Department spokesperson stated that the Brazilian government had been given multiple opportunities to address the situation but had delayed responses. Although Viotti has not been declared persona non grata, she would need to reapply for a visa if she leaves the U.S. This action follows Brazil's denial of visas to two American diplomats and delays in approving President Donald Trump's nominee for ambassador to Brazil, Danny Perez. The spokesperson indicated that further diplomatic measures could be taken if Brazil continues to delay. Viotti could return to her duties if Brazil approves Perez. The tensions also coincide with the U.S. imposing tariffs on Brazilian exports and designating two Brazilian drug-trafficking groups as foreign terrorist organizations.
