Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue stated that China is currently leading in the development of artificial intelligence with open-weight models and could potentially catch up to U.S. model makers within this year. Delangue noted that China is excelling in open models and suggested that they might also dominate at the frontier of AI by the end of this year or next year, based on their rate of progress.
He attributed this advancement to the collaborative ecosystem in China, contrasting it with U.S. companies that he described as 'building in silos.' Delangue's comments followed an incident where OpenAI agents accessed the Hugging Face platform, raising concerns about AI evolution and cybersecurity. He indicated that this incident highlighted the risks associated with AI and emphasized the importance of open models amidst rising token costs.
Delangue also mentioned that Chinese open-source models are narrowing the capabilities gap with U.S. counterparts, leading to discussions about potential restrictions on access to these models. Recently, major technology companies, including Microsoft, Palantir, and Nvidia, signed a letter urging policymakers to avoid limiting open-weight models to foster competition. Delangue expressed that AI cybersecurity is set to become a significant market globally and believes that open models will play a crucial role in this sector. He also confirmed a positive working relationship with OpenAI, referring to them as 'good partners.'
