Manhattan DA Responds to Defense Claims Regarding Media Access in Murder Trial

Manhattan prosecutors filed a request with a judge on August 3, 2026, to address claims made by Luigi Mangione's defense team regarding media access to his upcoming murder trial. The defense argued that the court's media access plan infringes on Mangione's constitutional right to a public trial and alleged that the Manhattan District Attorney's Office influenced which reporters could cover the trial. Prosecutors denied these allegations, stating that they had no involvement in the media access plan or the selection of journalists. Senior Trial Counsel Joel J. Seidemann emphasized that the defense's claims appeared to be an attempt to spread misinformation about the case. The defense attorneys, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo, and Jacob Kaplan, contended that the media restrictions constituted a partial closure of the trial, violating multiple amendments.
