Iran's foreign ministry has denied that negotiations are taking place with the United States, following President Donald Trump's announcement of new talks aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, which has lasted six months. The statement from the Iranian foreign ministry came after Trump indicated he had delayed military action against Iran to allow for diplomatic efforts. The conflict began on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel conducted surprise strikes against Iran.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated during a press briefing that the country is negotiating with Oman to secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. Baqaei emphasized that these discussions do not imply negotiations with the U.S. regarding the conflict. He noted that Iran has been obstructing vessels in the strait and is seeking to retain control over the passage.
On Sunday, a tanker near Oman reported an explosion, but no injuries were reported. Trump mentioned that the upcoming talks would address issues related to Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program, which the U.S. claims is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies. Trump also stated that he has been urged by Iran and U.S. allies to refrain from further military strikes.
Despite previous claims of nearing a settlement, fighting has continued, and a ceasefire agreement from last month collapsed. Iranian lawmaker Hassan Ghashghavi indicated that mediators are working to revive a memorandum of understanding established in June, which included provisions regarding Hormuz.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the need for Iran to ensure that the U.S. adheres to any agreements made.
