Bentonville — State Representative Austin McCollum was booked into the Benton County Jail early Saturday morning after being accused of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and domestic battery. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office arrested McCollum, 35, on suspicion of these charges, although formal charges have not yet been filed. He is currently being held without bond and awaits a bond hearing.
Benton County Prosecuting Attorney Bryan Sexton confirmed awareness of the arrest but declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation. McCollum, who won the Republican nomination for Benton County judge in the March primary, is currently the only candidate for the general election scheduled for November 3.
Following the allegations, several prominent Republicans, including Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, have called for McCollum to resign from his legislative position and withdraw from the county judge race. Sanders described the allegations as appalling and condemned violence in any form. U.S. Representative Steve Womack emphasized the need for accountability in cases of domestic violence.
House Speaker Brian Evans announced that McCollum would be removed from all House leadership positions and privileges due to the pending charges. Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Leslie Rutledge and Attorney General Tim Griffin also called for McCollum's resignation, expressing concern over the seriousness of the allegations.
Benton County Justice of Peace John Rissler stated he was withdrawing his endorsement of McCollum, citing the need for trust and integrity in public office. He expressed sympathy for all affected by the situation, including McCollum's family.
