Representative Tom Suozzi, a senior House Democrat from New York, has urged his party to counter the increasing influence of the socialist wing within the Democratic Party. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Suozzi expressed his disagreement with the ideas promoted by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and compared them to the House Freedom Caucus, a conservative group within the Republican Party. He criticized the DSA for using the term 'democratic' in its name, asserting that it misrepresents the party's values.
Suozzi noted that DSA-affiliated candidates have been gaining traction in primary elections, even defeating some incumbent progressives. He emphasized the need for Democrats to take the potential for a DSA takeover seriously and to actively combat this perception. He stated, 'I think you just come out head-on, and take it on and say, 'These guys are wrong. We've got nothing to do with them.'
As a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, Suozzi represents a diminishing group of moderates. He is a target for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections, with his district having previously supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Suozzi advised that Democrats should focus on specific policy issues rather than solely opposing Trump as a person, highlighting economic concerns such as rising grocery and fuel prices.
He also mentioned the need for Democrats to organize and present a united front against the socialist agenda, referencing his initiative, 'The Promise to America,' which aims to affirm the party's commitment to capitalism and mainstream values. Suozzi is currently campaigning against Republican Mike LiPetri, who has received Trump's endorsement.
