Nebraska Democratic Candidate Denise Powell Opposes Law Restricting Gender Transition Procedures for Minors

Denise Powell, the Democratic congressional nominee for Nebraska, has publicly opposed the state's 2023 law that restricts gender transition procedures for minors, describing it as discriminatory. Powell made several social media posts urging supporters to contact lawmakers regarding LB 574, known as the 'Let Them Grow Act,' which prohibits gender transition procedures for individuals under 19. In a March 2023 Facebook post, she encouraged Nebraskans to attend a Capitol rally wearing shirts that read 'PROTECT TRANS KIDS.' She stated that laws like LB 574 are being enacted across the country and expressed a desire for Nebraska to set a positive example for transgender youth and their families. Powell also used TikTok to voice her opposition to the legislation, sharing videos that highlighted protests against the law. The Nebraska Legislature passed LB 574 with a 33-15 vote, and it was signed into law by Governor Jim Pillen. A poll indicated that a majority of likely Nebraska voters supported prohibiting gender-altering procedures for minors. Powell is running against Republican Brinker Harding for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District seat.
