Former Vice President Kamala Harris has suggested that the United States should reconsider the Electoral College and the composition of the Supreme Court. During her remarks at the National Urban League Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday, Harris stated, "We need to revisit the Electoral College. We need to revisit the point of expanding the court to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts." She also mentioned the possibility of statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.
Harris indicated that she has not yet made a decision regarding a potential run for the presidency in 2028 but is currently focused on the upcoming midterm elections. Recently, she had a private phone call with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, which has led to speculation about her alignment with the Democratic Party's progressive wing.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supports abolishing the Electoral College and restructuring the Supreme Court, proposals that have drawn criticism from Republicans, who label them as radical. Democrats have historically opposed the Electoral College, particularly referencing the 2016 election where Donald Trump won the presidency despite losing the popular vote. In the past, Harris favored implementing 18-year term limits for justices rather than expanding the court.
