FBI Releases Updated Age-Progression Images of Suspect in 1983 Murder Case

The FBI has released new age-progression images of Thayne Alan Smika, the suspect in the 1983 murder of University of Colorado student Sidney Lee Wells. Wells was found dead in his Boulder apartment on August 1, 1983, with a gunshot wound to the head. Smika, who was a student at the time, has been evading arrest since being identified as a suspect during the initial investigation. A warrant for his arrest was issued in December 2010, and he is also charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his arrest. Authorities estimate that Smika is now 67 years old and may have lived in Yelapa, Mexico, prior to 2007. The Boulder Police are hopeful that the newly released images will generate leads in the ongoing investigation.
