Socialist candidates who won Democratic primaries earlier this year are actively campaigning for other progressive candidates across the United States. This effort aims to reform the image of the Democratic Party ahead of the upcoming primaries in Michigan and Missouri on August 4.
Candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other progressive organizations have been cross-endorsing each other and participating in joint events to strengthen their coalition for the November elections. Notably, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed, who is not a socialist, has received significant support from socialist candidates, including Donavan McKinney and Will Lawrence, who are running for Michigan's 13th and 7th Districts, respectively.
El Sayed has also appeared with Democratic nominees Brad Lander and Adam Hamawy, who are running in New York and New Jersey, respectively. Lander stated that he and el Sayed would collaborate on foreign policy if elected, highlighting their shared opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel.
On July 18, McKinney joined el Sayed at a campaign rally that featured Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. Ocasio-Cortez appeared in an advertisement for el Sayed, emphasizing their shared goals, including campaign finance reform and healthcare for all.
McKinney is also receiving support from Hamawy and Melat Kiros, who recently won her primary in Colorado. Kiros participated in a phone bank for McKinney organized by the local DSA chapter. Hamawy is scheduled to campaign for McKinney soon.
The endorsement strategy among progressives, particularly Ocasio-Cortez, has been notable this election cycle. In New York, Ocasio-Cortez and Mayor Zohran Mamdani coordinated their endorsements to maximize their influence, with Mamdani endorsing House candidates and Ocasio-Cortez focusing on state legislative races. Ocasio-Cortez explained that this approach reflects the natural limitations of individual elected positions and the importance of organizing support at multiple governance levels.
