The family of Tyler Wilkin is seeking to identify the individual responsible for his death, which has been characterized as an execution-style shooting. The 35-year-old was found dead from a gunshot wound to the back of his head on July 10 while camping at Playa La Selva in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. Wilkin, originally from Ohio, had relocated to Puerto Rico in 2024 with his girlfriend. A fundraiser has been initiated to raise $30,000 for hiring a private investigator to further investigate the case. The fundraiser's statement emphasizes the need to explore all possible avenues in the investigation.
Jamie Copenhaver, a former sheriff's investigator and private investigator, noted that Luquillo has a history of unsolved violent crimes. He mentioned that Wilkin had expressed concerns to friends about unusual howling noises and what sounded like fireworks outside his tent prior to his death. Copenhaver suggested that these noises could have been a tactic to lure Wilkin away from his campsite. He also expressed concern regarding the local police's capacity to handle the investigation due to the high volume of violent crimes in the area.
Copenhaver recommended that Wilkin's family contact the FBI in San Juan to ensure thorough investigation efforts. The FBI stated that they are providing technical assistance to the Puerto Rico Police Department, which is leading the investigation. They encouraged the public to submit any tips or information related to the case.
