Medicare Drug Subsidy Program Ending, Potential Cost Implications for Beneficiaries

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the conclusion of a temporary subsidy program that helped reduce Medicare Part D prescription drug costs for older adults. The program, which was initiated by the Biden administration in 2024, will end in 2027, potentially leading to increased monthly costs for beneficiaries. Federal officials claim the impact on costs will be minimal, estimating that most Medicare beneficiaries will see an increase of less than $10 per month. However, the decision has drawn criticism from Democrats, who argue it could raise prescription drug costs for millions of seniors. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated that the program's end would prevent billions of taxpayer dollars from going to insurance companies, which had cost an estimated $3.6 billion in 2026. The out-of-pocket cap for Medicare beneficiaries will remain unchanged, set at $2,100 for 2026 and projected to rise to $2,400 in 2027. The average monthly premium for Part D beneficiaries this year was $36, with subsidies offsetting $16 of that cost. CMS plans to release information on next year’s premiums in September.
