Fauci Invokes Fifth Amendment During Congressional Hearing

Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, did not testify before Congress on Wednesday as he invoked the Fifth Amendment. He was subpoenaed by a Republican-led Senate committee regarding his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fauci stated that Senator Rand Paul, who issued the subpoena, has an 'obvious obsession' with him and has called for his prosecution. Paul shared documents from Fauci's pandemic-era diary, which Fauci claimed were intended to embarrass him. During the hearing, Paul had one of Fauci's attorneys removed after he attempted to speak on behalf of Fauci. Fauci has previously testified before Congress numerous times throughout his career and has advised multiple U.S. presidents. Paul has accused Fauci of lying to Congress, although a pardon issued by President Joe Biden in July 2023 addressed this issue. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated that the pardon does not cover Fauci's testimony and warned that he must be held accountable if he continues to lie.
