Zelensky noted that Ukraine's stockpiles of these interceptors are nearly depleted, which has hindered the country's ability to defend against ballistic missile strikes, including recent attacks on Kyiv.
Zelensky emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that without adequate defense, Russian missile strikes could lead to the destruction of power plants, resulting in a humanitarian crisis as winter approaches. He mentioned that discussions with Trump during a recent NATO summit included the possibility of the U.S. granting licenses for Ukraine to produce its own interceptors, which could help reduce reliance on U.S. stockpiles.
Despite the potential for production, Zelensky acknowledged that it would take one to five years to manufacture significant quantities of interceptors, stating, "We need the Patriots yesterday," and requesting 300 interceptors by winter. He also highlighted the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has impacted U.S. military resources.
In addition to seeking Patriot interceptors, Zelensky discussed with U.S. defense companies the possibility of modifying Ukrainian-made ballistic missiles to serve as anti-missile interceptors. He described this approach as potentially faster and more cost-effective.
While the front line remains at a stalemate, Ukraine has reportedly gained momentum with drone and missile strikes targeting Russian infrastructure, contributing to gas shortages in Russia and increasing domestic criticism of the war. Zelensky expressed optimism about improving relations with Trump, noting that their discussions have become more constructive.
Zelensky also mentioned that U.S. mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine have been sidelined due to the conflict with Iran, although Trump envoys remain in contact with negotiators from both countries. He indicated a potential visit to Kyiv by Trump representatives in the coming weeks to discuss peace talks and assess the situation in Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed concern over Russia's military preparations, claiming that Russia continues to receive weapons from Iran and is building infrastructure for additional troops from North Korea. He suggested that these developments indicate a lack of willingness from Putin to cease hostilities.
