Investigation launched after remains of five newborns found in France

A man in France discovered the remains of five newborns hidden inside cardboard boxes in his home following an argument with his partner, who had recently given birth at home. The incident occurred in the town of Orange, where the couple, who have two other children aged eight and nine, had been arguing about the contents of the boxes. After the woman, 32, experienced abdominal pain, she was taken to a hospital, and her husband remained at home, where he found the remains. He subsequently notified authorities. Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into suspected murder, and a forensic pathologist estimated that the remains belonged to five newborns, including bones of four and the decomposing body of a fifth. Autopsies and further laboratory testing have been ordered. Child welfare services are assessing the couple's two older children, and a provisional placement order for the newborn baby has been issued. The mother has not yet spoken to investigators, and the couple was described by a neighbor as 'charming people.'
