An 83-year-old hiker, Gerald Guinn, was rescued after going missing in Grand Canyon National Park. Guinn, an experienced outdoorsman from Kanab, Utah, was found alive around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, approximately 2.5 miles from where he was last seen on the park's North Rim. He had disappeared on Monday after intentionally separating from his hiking companion while searching for a historic object. After his companion found the object and Guinn did not return, they called for help.
Search efforts involved crews from Grand Canyon National Park, Coconino County Search and Rescue, and Kane County Search and Rescue, who searched through rugged terrain using drones, search dogs, and helicopters. A cellphone ping helped narrow down the search area. When a National Park Service helicopter located Guinn, he was unable to walk but was in good spirits. Due to the terrain, a rescue team hiked about 1.5 miles to reach him. As night fell, a paramedic was flown to the scene, and approximately 20 rescuers carried Guinn through the rough terrain to a nearby road, reaching him around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. He was checked by emergency medical personnel and subsequently released.
