Cecilia Vega, a former correspondent for '60 Minutes,' has accused CBS News leadership of interfering with the show's reporting. Vega, who was terminated from her position in May, spoke at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference in New Orleans, expressing her concerns about the influence of management on journalistic integrity. She stated, 'It's not that I just lost a job. There is a lot at stake.'
Vega alleged that during her reporting on anti-ICE protests in Minnesota, she was pressured to include footage of confrontations involving individuals believed to be ICE agents, despite finding no credible examples. She also claimed that she was instructed to present comments from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a misleading context, which she refuted as misinformation.
Furthermore, Vega mentioned that she was directed to frame a report on President Trump's conflict with Iran using language that she considered a talking point of the administration. When asked if this alleged interference affected her reporting, she noted that such examples did not appear in her pieces.
Vega indicated that she was not given a reason for her termination and had not met with Bari Weiss, the new head of CBS News, prior to her firing. CBS News responded to her claims, stating that they respect Vega's contributions but assert that her allegations are unfounded. They also referenced Weiss's comments regarding editorial practices. Vega was among several staff members let go during a significant shakeup at '60 Minutes.'
