The council's launch took place in West Virginia, where Manchin convened several independent candidates, including California Representative Kevin Kiley, who is running for reelection as an independent, and Seth Bodnar, an independent Senate candidate from Montana. The initiative comes amid a growing trend of political independents, with a Gallup poll indicating that 45% of American adults identify as independents.
Manchin believes that independent lawmakers can exert significant influence in Congress, especially given the current closely divided chambers. He expressed hope that the council could help elect even one independent candidate in the upcoming elections, potentially impacting the next presidential election.
In addition to Manchin, the council includes advisers from the Independent Center, a nonprofit advocating for independent voters.
