University of Wyoming to Eliminate Philosophy Major Starting Fall 2027

The University of Wyoming will no longer offer a major in philosophy for incoming students starting in Fall 2027. This decision was communicated by philosophy professor Bradley Rettler via social media. Students will still have the option to major in 'philosophy and religion,' but not in 'philosophy' or 'religious studies.' Rettler noted that Wyoming will become the first state in the U.S. where a B.A. in Philosophy is not available. The University of Wyoming will also be the only R1 institution and state flagship university that does not offer this degree. The university is currently facing a $15 million budget shortfall, but it is unclear how the elimination of the philosophy major will impact faculty or if it will lead to layoffs. The university has not provided a justification for this decision.
