The agent is suspected of leaking details to MS Now regarding the vice president's personal travel plans, which reportedly caused frustration for his security detail. The MS Now report included information about the vice president's travel plans to Joint Base Andrews for a golf lesson, which was later changed following the report's publication.
Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi stated that the agent is the subject of an administrative investigation and potential criminal inquiry. He emphasized that any conduct threatening the safety of a protectee is unacceptable. The agent has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
A senior administration official explained that flying by helicopter to Joint Base Andrews allows for secure transportation without disrupting public areas or requiring extensive law enforcement resources. The vice president and second lady Usha Vance have previously discussed the challenges of motorcade disruptions during public appearances, particularly when attending church services.
The investigation occurs amid a reported increase in threats against Secret Service protectees, with the agency handling a record 10,000 threat-related cases in 2026, a 40% increase from the previous year. Secret Service Director Sean Curran noted that the threat environment is currently more volatile than ever.
The vice president's office has declined to comment further and referred inquiries to the Secret Service.
