Alex Murdaugh, who is awaiting a new trial for the murders of his wife and son, has been identified as one of South Carolina's largest individual tax delinquents, owing over $1.6 million in taxes, penalties, and interest. The South Carolina Department of Revenue reported that Murdaugh owes $1,630,201.02, making his debt the fourth-largest among individuals in the state. The department publishes a list of delinquent taxpayers to promote transparency and compliance, stating that they attempt to resolve debts through multiple communications before listing individuals publicly. Murdaugh's tax issues arise as he prepares for a second murder trial, following his conviction in March 2023 for the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. His defense team plans to raise various issues in the retrial, including testing unknown DNA found under Maggie's fingernails.
