Senate Republicans Block Effort to Halt Funding for Trump's New Air Force One

Senate Republicans have blocked an attempt by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to prevent taxpayer funding from being used to upgrade President Donald Trump's new Air Force One, a Boeing 747-8 luxury jet gifted by Qatar. Schumer raised concerns about the estimated $1 billion cost for retrofitting the aircraft and the potential security risks associated with it. Schumer introduced the Presidential Airlift Security Act, which would prohibit funding for aircraft previously owned by foreign governments. However, his proposal was opposed by Senator Deb Fischer, who argued that it could negatively impact national security by affecting other aircraft crucial for nuclear command and control operations. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that while the new Air Force One is safe for travel, it will undergo additional upgrades in the fall, during which time the president will use the old Air Force One.
