The Department of Justice (DOJ) is conducting a criminal investigation into Representative Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The specific focus of the investigation has not been disclosed. However, a third source indicated that at least one individual was contacted by the FBI last year regarding Mills' finances and allegations of misconduct involving people associated with him.
This investigation coincides with an ongoing inquiry by the House Ethics Committee, which is examining allegations that include campaign finance violations, sexual misconduct, acceptance of improper gifts, financial disclosure violations, and misuse of congressional resources. Mills has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he is unaware of the investigation, claiming that the Federal Election Commission had previously dismissed allegations related to campaign finance.
The House Ethics Committee launched its investigation into Mills in November 2025 and has since expanded its scope to include potential misuse of office and unreported gifts on official trips. Allegations of sexual misconduct include claims of dating violence that resulted in a restraining order against Mills, which has since expired.
Mills, who was elected to represent Florida's 7th Congressional District in 2022, is running for re-election in November, with a primary scheduled for August 18. Despite facing bipartisan calls for his resignation or expulsion from the House, Mills has maintained his innocence and refused to step down. House GOP leaders have not moved to expel him, citing the ongoing Ethics Committee investigation.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of the Ethics Committee's process in addressing allegations. Mills also recently faced a legal complaint from a Republican opponent regarding the notarization of his candidate documents, which was dismissed by a judge, although the plaintiff plans to appeal the decision.
