Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson is leading in the delegate selection process to become the Democratic nominee for the Senate seat previously contested by Graham Platner. Jackson's supporters secured over 90% of the 319 delegate slots available during the selection process held across Maine's 16 counties. Jackson expressed gratitude to his supporters in a video message, stating, "We’re well on our way to getting the government that we deserve."
With a strong position heading into the nominating convention, Jackson is set to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming midterm elections. The current Senate composition is 53 Republicans to 47 Democrats. Jackson, who has a background as a logger and previously identified as a conservative Republican, is running on a progressive platform that includes proposals for raising taxes on billionaires and supporting universal healthcare.
The delegate selection process will continue, with 181 delegates to be chosen from eight remaining counties. The total of 601 delegates will vote for the Senate nominee at the convention in Bangor next Saturday. Jackson's main competitor, Nirav Shah, secured only a few delegates, while Shenna Bellows and Jordan Wood lagged further behind. Platner, who had been a strong candidate, withdrew from the race following allegations of misconduct, which he denied. Jackson had previously called for Platner to step down amid the controversy.
