The Pennsylvania defense summit, held over two days, resulted in more than 30 agreements totaling nearly $10 billion in defense contracts, which are expected to create over 4,000 jobs in the state. The summit was attended by more than 500 organizations and hosted by Senator Dave McCormick at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
President Donald Trump participated in a roundtable discussion to conclude the summit, highlighting the significance of the investments in the defense industry. He stated, "We’re here today to celebrate a colossal victory for this commonwealth and for the entire nation. This afternoon, we’re announcing nearly $10 billion of new investments in our defense industry right here in the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and these investments will create more than 4,000 jobs.”
The agreements focus on three main areas: defense industrial base, emerging technology, and research and development. Notable contracts include a 10-year, $2.5 billion agreement between Rhoads Industries and General Dynamics Electric Boat for advanced manufacturing and shipbuilding, a $2.3 billion contract from Day & Zimmerman for operations and maintenance at the Hawthorne Army Depot, and a $1.5 billion deal for new ship orders secured by Hanwha Group.
Local universities, including Penn State and Carnegie Mellon University, also reached new agreements or extended existing partnerships. The Pentagon aims to advance emerging technologies while addressing the need for skilled workers in trades such as welding and machining. David Norquist, president of the National Defense Industrial Association, commented on the challenges of developing a skilled workforce in the defense sector.
