Man dies after being struck by tractor trailer while fleeing immigration agents in Florida

A man was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on Tuesday while fleeing from immigration and federal agents in Florida, according to authorities. This incident marks the third death in a week involving encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, following two shootings in Texas and Maine. The 28-year-old was one of four individuals in a vehicle that stopped at a gas station in the St. Augustine area before 7 a.m. During the encounter with ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents, the group fled on foot, with one individual running across a busy road into the path of the semi-truck, as stated by Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan. The driver of the truck stopped to assist the man. This incident is noted as at least the 10th death associated with encounters with immigration agents since the initiation of a mass deportation campaign by the Trump administration. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed an operation was conducted but did not clarify the reasons for the encounter or the status of the other three individuals in the vehicle. State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democrat from Jacksonville, described the incident as a tragedy resulting from the actions of an uncontrolled agency. She referenced other fatal incidents involving individuals fleeing from immigration officers, including cases in California and Virginia. The Mexican government has requested U.S. state attorneys general to investigate the deaths of migrants in ICE custody or during raids for potential criminal prosecution.
