CARLISLE, Pennsylvania — Hundreds of defense companies attended the Defense and Innovation Summit at the Army War College near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 15, 2026, to explore partnership opportunities with each other and the Department of War. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) hosted the event, which featured a 'speed dating' format for about 250 companies to facilitate meetings aimed at collaboration, according to a staff member for the senator.
The summit included approximately 500 companies, with 70% to 80% having business ties to Pennsylvania. Many of the companies that do not currently operate in the state expressed interest in establishing a presence there. The meetings were categorized into four types: buyer-supplier, company-investor, organization-researcher, and organization-workforce developer.
Pennsylvania is significant to the defense industrial base, hosting nearly 9,000 companies that employ over 190,000 people and have secured more than $250 billion in Pentagon contracts over the past two decades. The summit featured traditional defense contractors, newer entrants, and representatives from Pennsylvania universities, focusing on fields such as manufacturing, critical minerals, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and space.
Emil Michael, the undersecretary of war for research and engineering, emphasized the need for a wartime footing in light of global conflicts. The Pentagon's defense budget request for fiscal 2027 is approximately $1.15 trillion, with additional requests potentially bringing the total to $1.5 trillion, marking it as the largest defense budget in U.S. history.
Senator McCormick highlighted the challenges posed by global adversaries and the importance of adapting to technological advancements in warfare. General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, noted the critical role of the attendees in innovating and manufacturing technology for military operations, emphasizing the need for rapid decision-making on the battlefield.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak on the second day of the summit, along with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Air Force Secretary Troy Meink.
